Blue Zones: A Journey Back to My Roots

By Adalys E. Díaz

What if the secret to a long, healthy life was not a supplement, a diet trend, or a medical procedure, but the way an entire community lives?

In the early 2000s, researcher and author Dan Buettner set out to reverse engineer longevity. With a grant from the National Institute on Aging and a National Geographic assignment, he traveled the world guided by two core assumptions: first, that genes have relatively little impact on how long we live, and second, that in those places around the world where people are living longer, they are doing something right.¹

What he found was eye-opening, and a little humbling for modern Americans. We spend billions of dollars on vitamins, supplements, and protein products that studies show most people do not actually need. We spend more than $160 billion per year trying to exercise, yet only about one fifth of all adults get the minimum recommended amount of vigorous activity, roughly 11 minutes per day. And we spend more than $200 billion on diets that fail for almost everyone, almost all the time.

Clearly, we are working very hard at living well, and something is not adding up. Dan Buettner believed the answer was not another product or program, but a place. He identified five regions of the world where people consistently live past 100 in remarkable health. He called them Blue Zones.

The Five Blue Zones are:

  • SARDINIA, ITALY: Mountain villages where men live exceptionally long lives, staying physically active into old age.

  • OKINAWA, JAPAN: Home to the world's longest-living women, with strong social bonds and a plant-rich diet.

  • NICOYA PENINSULA, COSTA RICA: A community with deep purpose, strong faith, and simple, nourishing food.

  • IKARIA, GREECE: An island where people seem to "forget to die," with low rates of dementia and heart disease.

  • LOMA LINDA, CALIFORNIA: A Seventh-day Adventist community that lives 10 years longer than average Americans.

What Do They All Have in Common?

Despite their differences in culture and geography, Blue Zone communities share a set of habits and values known as the Power 9: they move naturally throughout the day, eat mostly plants, stop eating when they are 80% full, manage stress through prayer, rest, or community, belong to a faith community, prioritize family, and surround themselves with people who share healthy habits.

Making Blue Zones Part of your Everyday Life

You do not need to move to Sardinia to benefit from Blue Zones wisdom. And here is what I love most about this, it is simple. Not a complicated protocol, not an expensive program, not a strict regimen. Just small, intentional changes that mean everything for your health. A plant-forward meal. A daily walk. Putting down your phone to share a meal with someone you love. These are not sacrifices, they are gifts you give yourself every day.

My fascination with Dan Buettner's work is deeply personal. I grew up in the mountains of Puerto Rico, where life looked very different from the fast-paced, processed, disconnected world many of us live in today. We moved naturally, ate simply, stayed close to family and community. I did not know it then, but I was living a Blue Zones life. Now, years later, I find myself not only studying these principles, I am longing to return to that way of living, and more importantly, I am helping my patients find their own path back to it.

At Díaz Acupuncture & Integrative Health, I incorporate Blue Zones principles into my nutrition counseling and lifestyle medicine services. I am proud to share that my practice is on the path to becoming a Blue Zones certified practice, and I am preparing to sit for the Lifestyle Medicine Board Exam in November 2026.

I have all of Dan Buettner's books and I am genuinely fascinated by his work and the profound simplicity of his findings. I encourage you to explore them, you can find his complete collection on Amazon.
